Be it the sanctions policy against Russia or a joint declaration criticizing China’s Hong Kong security law – EU decisions are regularly blocked by the veto of a single member state. Many EU citizens say this hostage-taking on foreign policy must end. They call for making majority voting the rule. On the other hand, there are smaller EU member states that fear being outvoted. And there are the euroskeptic governments which believe that European integration has already gone too far.
What is your opinion? Would the EU be stronger without national vetoes? Or do unanimous decisions actually strengthen European unity?
Let’s discuss this with our guests:
• Omri Preiss, Managing Director of Alliance4Europe
• Damian Boeselager, Member of European Parliament, Volt
• Gaby Bischoff, Member of the European Parliament, S&D
